Portrait of Sam Peden in Community Park, New Albany, Ind., 1968
The BPW Hoosiers had many supporters who helped them along the way. When Letty Walter approached Sam Peden, superintendent of the parks department, about forming the team, herounded up equipment for the girls to use and made sure they had a place to practice.
Peden was an advocate for girls’ sports in the parks and an early proponent of the BPW Hoosiers. Recent superintendent Roger Jeffers has continued Peden’s legacy of supporting sports for all children.
