Field of Memories: BPW Hoosiers Softball

Team with Mary Alexander.jpg

Step back into 1950s New Albany, before Title IX guaranteed equal access to school activities. Girls in the Floyd County area who wanted to play group sports had few options, despite many activities for boys. That is, until Letty Walter, an employee of the Parks Department, organized the first girls’ softball team in New Albany, called the BPW Hoosiers.

The team was active from 1957 to 1969, dominating Kentuckiana softball and becoming one of the best teams in the nation. They played about 30 games per year and ultimately won ten consecutive Louisville City Tournaments, eight Louisville Metro Tournaments, five Kentuckiana Slow Pitch Softball Tournaments, and played in six World Tournaments--even finishing fourth in 1964.

This digital exhibit presents highlights of the team's story, and features the players and supporters who helped them make history.

Indigenous Peoples of Southern Indiana

Miami+Flag(1)(1).jpg

The land now known as/occupied by Floyd County was previously home to the Miami and Shawnee people, as well as others, likely the Wea, Piankashaw, Osage, Lenape, and Eel River people, and other peoples whose names we do not know.

The Indiana Room at The Floyd County Library is currently trying to organize what little information exists in our own archives, as well as those of other nearby repositories, in an attempt to better represent the full scope of regional history. So, stay tuned!

Statement on Sensitive Content and Language

The Floyd County Library preserves and provides access to materials significant to the history of Floyd County. Because of the nature of historical records, some materials include language or images that may be outdated, biased, or unsettling. While this content does not reflect our community values of today, it may be representative of the views of some residents during the time period in which it originated. The library attempts to preserve these materials in the interest of historical integrity, while being respectful about how they are presented.

Due to the volume of the library’s special collections, attempts to revise outdated language and flag sensitive content are ongoing. Patrons are welcome to provide feedback by emailing indiana@nafclibrary.org.

The Underground Railroad: The Still Family and Charles Nalle

Mark-Priest-Header.jpeg

The Carnegie Center for Art and History is pleased to present The Underground Railroad: The Still Family & Charles Nalle, an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Mark Priest. Centered around the story of the Still Family’s attempts at freedom and the impossible choice to leave loved ones behind, Priest’s work portrays actual accounts of the perilous Underground Railroad. He vividly depicts the mental, emotional, and physical prowess needed to escape enslavement and reunite a family.
